How to structure a shift handover so open work is not lost

A handover should highlight what the next shift needs to act on, not force them to read a diary of everything that happened.

Lead with operational state

Record current equipment/process status and any immediate safety or service concern.

Separate completed and open work

Make unfinished tasks visibly different and include why they remain open.

Assign the next action

Every important open item should have an owner or receiving role and a clear next step.

Confirm the transfer

Use a short acknowledgement or verbal check for high-priority items when your process requires it.
